A 4 seater that actually fits an Indian apartment

Most 4 seater dining tables sold online are 48 inches or longer. In a standard 2BHK dining area, that leaves you turning sideways to get past a pulled-out chair. This one is 45 x 34 inches: small enough to keep your walkways clear, large enough that four adults eat without negotiating elbow room.

The frame is solid Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo). Not veneer over MDF, and not engineered wood with a Sheesham-coloured laminate. You can verify this yourself when it arrives. Look at the cut ends of the legs and the underside of the tabletop: real Sheesham carries the same grain through the full thickness of the board. A laminate stops at the surface.

Will it fit your room?

Measure your dining area, then allow 90 cm of clear floor on every side you need to walk past. For this table that works out to roughly 294 x 266 cm (9 ft 8 in x 8 ft 9 in) for comfortable movement all the way around.

If your room is tighter than that, push one long side against a wall. You lose one seat position but keep the circulation, and it still works as a three-plus-one for daily meals.

Living with Sheesham

Sheesham darkens slightly over its first year, and this shows more in the natural finish than the walnut. It is the wood oxidising, not a defect. Most people end up preferring the deeper tone it settles into.

Wipe spills the same day. Standing water is the one thing that will mark the finish. A dry cloth for daily cleaning and a light wax polish twice a year is the whole maintenance routine. No oiling schedule, no annual re-polishing.

Keep it out of direct afternoon sun where you can. Sun fades and dries solid wood faster than daily use ever will.

Who this suits

Good fit: couples, families of three or four, 2BHK and 3BHK apartments, and homes where the dining table doubles as a work desk or the children's homework table. The 34-inch width takes a laptop and a notebook side by side.

Not the right fit: if you host six or more people more than occasionally, size up. Squeezing extra chairs around a 4 seater is uncomfortable for everybody, and a 6 seater dining set costs less than you would expect.

Between 42 and 48 inches long and 30 to 36 inches wide. Each person needs about 60 cm of table edge to eat comfortably. At 45 x 34 inches this table sits in the middle of that range, which is why it works in compact rooms without feeling cramped.

Is Sheesham wood good for a dining table?
Yes, and it is the most widely used hardwood for dining furniture in India for good reason. Sheesham is dense, naturally resistant to termites, and holds joinery well, so the table does not develop wobble over time the way softwood and engineered board do. It is heavier than mango wood and considerably cheaper than teak for similar durability.

Does Sheesham wood crack or warp?
Properly seasoned Sheesham is highly resistant to both. Cracking in Sheesham furniture almost always traces back to timber that was not dried properly before construction, or to placing the piece directly next to a heat source. Fine surface lines along the grain are a natural characteristic of the species, not a structural fault.

Do I need to assemble it myself?

What is the difference between the natural and walnut finish?
Natural keeps the wood's original honey-brown tone and shows the grain most clearly. Walnut is a darker, richer brown that hides marks better and suits rooms with lighter walls and flooring. Both use the same wood and the same construction, so it is purely a colour choice.

How much space do I need around a dining table?
Allow 90 cm between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture on any side people walk past, and 75 cm minimum on sides they only need to sit at. Below 75 cm, chairs cannot be pulled out far enough to sit down properly.

Can I use this table for four people daily and six occasionally?
Six is a squeeze at 45 inches. You can seat five with one person at the head of the table. For regular six-person meals, a 6 seater dining table set is the honest answer.
